ABOUT ME

Joseph Wong

Since my time at the California Academy of Sciences (CAS), I have been interested in the creation and deployment of media to educate people. It was within this youth development program to provide at-risk youth STEM opportunities that I had to opportunity to combine my passion for video production and informal science education to directly impact the learning of the Academy's guest.  When I saw the powerful platform entertaining media could take effect to an all-ages audience, I wanted to make use of these methods and apply it broadly in all learning environments. While at UCI, I had to the opportunity to research the efficacy of multimedia learning and apply these artistic digital works not only in higher education instruction but also in Title I elementary schools in Orange County. Having the opportunity to practice media, research its effectiveness, and interact with the students (elementary and undergraduate) who experienced these interventions, I knew that I wanted to use media to make impactful outcomes that could serve a rapidly changing diverse community of learners. As such, my previous work at the Academy, my educational research for the learning community, and my current role as director of videography for an NSF grant striving to develop equitable science education for public education have molded my pursuit for a PhD that integrates my passions for digital media and education. Ultimately, I hope to earn a higher education degree to further mature my pedagogical foundation and research methodologies necessary to one day provide similar opportunities that were once afforded to me.
